Discussion 11.2: Confronting Gender Inequity in Music

Q The gender disparities we examined this week in the art world are consistent with similar phenomena in the music industry. The Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California publishes an annual report called "Inclusion in the Recording Studio?" Please read a summary of the report published in 2021 here: Annenberg Inclusion Initiative's annual report on popular music reveals little progress for women The USC project, with funding from Spotify, is only one of many initiatives seeking to not only shine light on inequity, but also to encourage change. Another example is a 2021 study called "Be the Change - Women Making Music" that highlighted many of the challenges facing women in the music industry. You can read the study here: Be the Change: Women Making Music Berklee has launched many initiatives aimed at addressing gender imbalances in music. In 2018, for example, the college launched the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. Founded by multiple Grammy Award–winning drummer, producer, and educator Terri Lyne Carrington, the mission of this institute is to "recruit, teach, mentor, and advocate for musicians seeking to study jazz, with gender justice and racial justice as guiding principles." A look at the number of female students, faculty, and staff at Berklee reveals some encouraging numbers in recent years. The 2020–21 Berklee Factbook revealed that 43 percent of students were female—up from 35 percent in 2014. 37 percent of faculty were women in 2021—up from 28 percent in 2014, and women staff members made up 49 percent of the college in 2021—up from 44 percent in 2014. In 2020, Berklee further demonstrated its commitment to to gender equity by hiring its first-ever female president, Erica Muhl: Berklee Announces Erica Muhl as New President Even given these incremental steps at Berklee and steps taken in the industry at large, there is clearly a great deal of work to do going forward. What is one thing that you can do, or one thing you would like to see happen, to create a more inclusive space in the specific area of the musical industry that you plan on entering? Do you know of any organizations in your area dedicated to these issues? If so, share them with your classmates. Your post should be two to three (well-developed) paragraphs long.

Equality is a major issue among the artists. Since the times of the Guerilla Girls, women artists are protesting against the fact that women artists do not get equal recognition as the male artists. It can be noticed even in the field of art that women artists are judged based on their gender and not based on their capabilities. This is one of the major problems faced by all of the people who are in the field of art. The major problem is that people tend to think that women will lack equal potential in the field of art. In the field of music too, women artists lack opportunities
